NINA L.B. KELLEY
Nina Kelley is this
year’s recipient of the Memorial Award.
A resident of Harwinton since 1940, Mrs. Kelley, 92,
has been involved intensively in community affairs.
She currently makes her home on Whetstone Road with
her son Arthur J. Kelley Jr.
Having served as its chairman for 12 years, Mrs. Kelley
introduced and organized the Harwinton Visiting Nurse
Association. She is now a life member of the organization.
Mr’s Kelley also helped organize the Harwinton
Volunteer Ambulance Association. She served as fund-raising
chairman for the first two years.
An elementary school teacher for many years, Mrs. Kelley
was born in Boston and attended New Haven Normal School.
She taught in many communities including Torrington,
Waterbury, Thomaston, Seymour and Falls Village.
A school board member for 12 years, Mrs. Kelley served
as chairman for two of those years.
Mrs. Kelley conducted the town’s first kindergarten
in her home for about 15 years until a kindergarten
was made part of the school system. “Many of the
people in town are my children.” Mrs. Kelley said.
She was an officer on the town, state and federal level
of the Americal Legion Auxiliary, working through the
American Legion Auxiliary in Thomaston. She served as
unit president, district president and member of the
National Executive Committee.
During World War II, Mrs. Kelley the chief observer
for aircraft in the community, organizing groups throughout
the area.
She helped publish a newspaper sent to servicemen from
the area every six weeks and collected items for Christmas
boxes for servicemen.
The widow of Arthur J. Kelley, Mrs. Kelley has two children,
he son with whom she makes her home and Mrs. Howard
(Lorraine) Fenn of Darien. She has four grandchildren
- Penny Kirchofer of Harwinton, Howard J. Fenn
Jr. of Norwalk, Betsey Nina Fenn of Darien and Kelley
Carter of Boston. Kevin and Gregory Kirchofer and Jeffrey
Koehler are her great-grandchildren.
