MADALEINE B. ROY

Madaleine B. Roy, a resident of Harwinton for more than 60 years, is this year’s recipient of the Arthur B. Poole Award.

Madaleine’s accomplishments, according to the Award Committee range from with the American Red Cross during World War II to serving as treasurer of the Harwinton Sundowners, which she has been a member for 13 years.

“Madeleine is the type of individual who commits herself 100 percent to any obligation that she accepts,” the committee statement read.

Long active in town government, the Lake Harwinton Road resident served as assistant town clerk to Helen Bentley for 15 years. She was also on the Board of Assessors for 20 years, serving as its chairman for a time. During her chairmanship, she was the first Harwinton assessor to earn a state of Connecticut certification for assessing.
Roy was also registrar of Harwinton voters for many years and was secretary to the Zoning Commission. She still acts as a consultant to the commission.

Other political activities include 35 years as a member of the Harwinton Republican Town Committee, with stints as vice chairman and secretary for the group, and membership in the Litchfield Count Woman’s Republican Club.

She has also been a member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church and choir since their origin.

Invitations to the Award ceremony were sent to her family and friends including her two children, Jane W. Thrall and Charles L. Weingart, as well as town officials.

Roy has eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
