LLOYD
T. SHANLEY JR.
First Selectman
Lloyd T. Shanley Jr. is this year’s recipient
of the Arthur P. Poole Award.
Currently serving his tenth term, Shanley, 62 and a
lifelong resident, has been First Selectman for 19 years.
He also served as Selectman for several years prior
to that.
Shanley served five consecutive terms as first selectman
from 1959 - 1969. After an eight year hiatus,
he was elected to the first selectman’s position
again in 1977 and at each of the ensuing municipal elections.
The Harwinton native has served in various other capacities
including being a member of the town’s first Zoning
Commission, member of the original Board of Finance,
member and chairman of the old Town Hall Building Committee.
He has been an active leader in 4-H on the local, state
and national level and a member of the Harwinton Agricultural
Society and the Harwinton Historical Society.
Shanley is a local representative to the Connecticut
Resources Recovery Authority and belongs to the Connecticut
Association of Street and Highway Officials.
His list of credits also includes charter membership
in the Harwinton Lions Club and service as senior deacon,
choir member and finance committee member f his church.
Married to Town Clerk Cherie D. Shanley, the first selectman
has been employed as a farmer and contractor.
