ARTHUR B. POOLE
AWARD
1977 Honoree
HENRY
J. DELAY SR.
Henry J. Delay
Sr. is this year’s recipient.
Henry came to Harwinton in 1901 when he was two years
old. His father established a dairy farm on 260 acres
which has been in operation since. He was elected to
the Board of Assessors in 1932 and, except for a brief
intermission in the 1930’s, has served continuously
since that time.
A Republican, he was elected for two one-year terms
to the Board of Selectmen from 1933-1935. He also was
a member of the Board of Tax Review for one year in
1941.
Henry was elected state representative in 1937. He retired
from state politics in 1959, after 22 years in the General
Assembly.
Henry has belonged to the Harwinton Grange for 55 years
and the Agricultural Society for 65 years. In addition,
he is a former fire warden.
Carl Pallokat, who presented the award, gave a brief
history of Henry’s 76 years in Harwinton. He spoke
of Henry’s learning to milk a cow when he was
five, and of the Delay cider mill, the first in the
area, which produced seven gallons of cider per hour.
