GEORGE F. GRIBEN

George F. Griben has been selected as this year’s award recipient.

Griben has served as a constable in Harwinton for 32 years. He has been a member of the Connecticut State Police Auxiliary for 20 years. He was the only active constable for Harwinton for 15 years.

An active participant in Boy Scott activities, Griben is a former cub master and committee man for Pack 36 and assistant scoutmaster and scoutmaster for troop 36. He now serves as Commissioner for the Tunxis District, Long Rivers Council of Boy Scouts for Harwinton and in on the committee of Boy Scout Troop 55. He is also a member of the Order of the Arrow, Tunxis Lodge 491.

A member of the Harwinton Volunteer Fire Department, Griben served as that group’s secretary for 20 years. He is a charter member and is on the executive committee of the Harwinton Volunteer Ambulance Association. Griben is a Red Cross certified first aid instructor and graduated from the first EMT class at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital in Torrington.

Other interests of George Griben include membership in the Harwinton Agricultural Society, the Harwinton Grange No. 45, where he is a 30-year member, Civil Preparedness and the Harwinton Historical Society. He is also a charter member of the Harwinton Little League.

Griben grew up in Harwinton and graduated from the Harwinton Center School on Litchfield Road in 1938. He attended Torrington High School and graduated from Connecticut State Trade School as an electrician in June, 1943. He attended Central Connecticut State College in New Britain and Waterbury State Technical Institute.

A communicant of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, he is married to the former Celine Marchand. They have two sons, Michael, a marine biologist for Tetratech Corp in Seattle, Washington; and Andre, a student at the School of X-Ray Technology of St. Francis Hospital Medical Center, Hartford.
