ARTHUR B. POOLE
AWARD
1994 Honoree
CLIFFORD
E. ANDERSON
A long time resident
who served with the fire department and ambulance corps
was selected from a field of six candidates for this
annual award.
Clifford Anderson 80, who lives on Harmony Hill Road,
in addition to his tenure with the Harwinton Volunteer
Fire Department and the Harwinton Ambulance Association,
where he was a driver for 20 years, was also involved
in scouting and worked as a dispatcher for the fire
department for nearly 15 years.
“He’s been very active for many years,”
said Bruce Mosher, chairman of the Poole Awards Committee
and a past recipient of the award.
Anderson was selected for the honor Thursday during
an award committee meeting at the Moshers home. But
his name was not announced until several days later
because he is wintering with his wife Phyllis Anderson
in Lake Wales, Florida and he could not be reached.
Anderson’s daughter Joan Kirchner of Harwinton
said he was thrilled with the award.
“He was kind of like, speechless”, Kirchner
said. “He’s the kind of guy who would always
help somebody out. I’m very pleased.”
With his wife Phyllis, he provided 24 hour coverage
for the fire department phone for a number of years
until an answering service was instituted, He also assisted
with various scout groups and participated in the fund
raising drive to rebuild the Harwinton Congregational
Church after the 1949 fire.
