"ED" AHLBERG
Carl “Ed”
Ahlberg has been selected as the 1979 recipient of this
award.
Carl, a 19 year resident of Harwinton, has figured prominently
in civic affairs related to services to the town’s
senior citizens. He is the Municipal Agent on Aging
for the town and serves on the Northwestern Connecticut
Area Agency on Aging Task Force. He was chairman of
NAAA for two years. He is also a member of the Agency
on Aging council and health group.
He has been president of the Harwinton sundowners senior
citizens group since the group’s inception in
1973 and is a director of the Harwinton Homes for Senior
Citizens.
Other civic responsibilities have included membership
on the Harwinton Republican Town Committee and service
as machine mechanic for town elections. In 1975, Carl
served an internship under Senator Lowell Weicker, R-Conn,
was a representative for NAAA.
A former deacon and church council chairman of the Harwinton
Congregational Church, Carl presently serves on the
church’s building and grounds committee.
Carl retired in 1969 from Pratt and Whitney Colt Industries
in West Hartford where he was employed for 38 years
as a personnel interviewer and supervisor of the apprentice
training program.
He has participated in courses at Central Connecticut
State College and Hillyer College.
Before moving to Harwinton, Alhberg lived in Newington
where he was a volunteer fireman for 25 years and captain
of the local fire department there for 15 years. He
was a member of the Newington Police Commission for
10 years and chairman of that group for two years.
Carl is past master of Centennial Lodge, A.F. &
A.M., New Britain, and Sequin Lodge, Newington and past
patron of the Order of Eastern Star. He was past district
deputy of the Grand Lodge of the State of Connecticut.
Carl and his wife Gladys, who celebrated their 50th
wedding anniversary in 1978, live on Woodchuck Lane.
They are the parents of Ronald Ahlberg of Barkhamsted
and Mrs. Linda Dusing of Southington. The Ahlbergs have
eight grandchildren.
