The winner of
this year’s Arthur Poole Memorial Award for community
service is Leroy “Bronc” Callahan, who has
been saying yes to volunteer opportunities for more
than 40 years.
“I just can’t say no to people. They ask
me to do it, and I just say “sure”, he said.
“I’ve loved this town since I came here
in 1942, and since I married my wife here in 1946.”
Callahan, 65, was chosen by a committee of six residents
on the basis of letters of recommendation, Ernest Fowler,
chairman of the Arthur Poole Memorial Award Committee,
said.
“We read every one of the letters…..then….
we go with a paper ballot to see who gets it,”
he said.
The committee lauded Callahan for his many volunteer
activities.
“The Lions Club, The Ambulance Association, The
Fire Department, the 4H Club, the Historical Society
… any time you call him, he goes,” Fowler
said.
“And you can kid with him, joke with him, he’s
a very nice guy<’ he added.
Callahan, who lives on Harmony Hill Road, has also worked
as a Justice of the Peace, Town Constable, and served
on the Harwinton Land Trust and Tax Review Board. He
has also been chairman of the Republican Town Committee.
“You just get involved. I remember when I had
only one night a week free,” Callahan said.
He has delivered Thanksgiving meals for the Salvation
Army, supervised the cattle barn at the Harwinton Fair
and coached basketball at what is now the Harbur Middle
School.
“I hope I don’t slow my pace, I think it’s
important to stay active,” Callahan said.
He still does volunteer work for the Lions Club, the
Harwinton Ambulance Association, the Harwinton Fire
Department, the 4H Club, the Harwinton Fair Association,
and the Harwinton Land Trust.
In 1988, Callahan retired from an administration position
at Northeast Utilities, but last year, he still won
the company’s “Volunteer of the Year Award.”
Callahan will be awarded a plaque and $300 to be donated
to the charities of his choice at the awards dinner.
