Robert Reynolds, a long time town resident who passed away Nov. 7, 1991 at the age of 79, has been awarded the Arthur B. Poole award for community service, Bruce Mosher, chairman of the nominating committee, said recently.

This is the second consecutive year that the Award Committee has honored a resident who is no longer living.

The committee has honored living residents on an annual basis for the past 19 years. George Young is this year’s recipient, which is named for the late industrialist and community volunteer Arthur B. Poole.

Reynolds was chosen to receive the commemorative award based on his consistent volunteer service to Harwinton over the course of his lifetime, Mosher said.

Reynolds helped incorporate the Harwinton Volunteer Fire Department in the early 1940s and then served as a volunteer firefighter in the department for several decades.

At the annual Harwinton Agricultural Fair, Reynolds was in charge of the organization and judging of the fruit and vegetable display.

He also served as a deacon at the Harwinton Congregational Church.
“He was satisfied with what he had in life,” his widow, Alva said. “I never knew him to be jealous of anybody or anything they had.”

As a lifetime resident of Harwinton, he loved the town and wanted to be involved in its activities.

After the Congregational church burned down in 1949, Bob chaired the rebuilding committee.

He also served as the church’s financial secretary.

Reynolds owned and managed his own bus company, which contracted out its three buses and one van to the Region 10 school system.

During World War II he was a member of the board that rationed out scarce provisions to residents to help the war effort.

“He’d be happy about the award, but he was never one to look for publicity,” Alva said.
