Due to a shortage
of funds the church opened and operated for a number
of years without a steeple. In 1962 the Methodist Church
in Torrington was to be torn down and the steeple from
that church was given to this church. For a few months
it lay on the side of the church while it was repaired,
reshingled and prepared for installation on top of the
belfry.
With the steeple
finally in place, the Meeting House was now complete.
The town of Harwinton, at least to the residents of
South Road, had been given a perfect face lift.
The fire of 1949
remains the most significant structural loss due to
natural causes that the town has ever suffered through.
