I remember being in a Christmas
play and playing the part of Mary, in the manger and singing
“O Holy Night”.
Another fond memory is of our teacher Miss Yankus,
showing us how to make puppets for “Hansel &
Gretel” out of white cloth material with yarn
hair and beautiful materials for their costumes which
we hand-sewn. I made four puppets, a clown, which was
the master of ceremonies, the witch, mother and Hansel.
It was great fun putting on the show for the children
& parents. The boys built the stage and props and
all had fun. We entered our puppets and our artwork
in the Harwinton Fair.
Some of the classmates I remember are the Haughtalings,
the Grech boys and their sister Helen; the Weingarts,
Lee Gangell, who lived next to the school. I fell in
his backyard pond covered with snow, Miss Yankus had
me sit next to the wood-burning stove to dry my socks
and warm my feet.
I also remember Josephine Selmo who played football
with the boys.
Last but not least, I remember walking to school on
Bogue Road with woods on both sides, with my step-sister
Carolyn Winegar. We were two frightened little girls
until we met up with Tommy Reynolds at the fork in the
road. He was such a rascal chasing us and teasing always.
The Grech boys (oldest to the youngest) Joey, Johnny,
Eddie, and Andy were the real rascals in school. Helen
Grech, whom I’ve met on and off through the years,
was a very nice person.
Those were the good old days and we all had a lot of
fun in that little schoolhouse. It has since been converted
into a home.
Our one-room reunion, what a thrill to be invited to
join old friends, classmates and wonderful teachers.
Our appearances have changed since then that’s
true,
We hope to be recognizable to at least quite a few,
A friend once said “Don’t say you attended
a one-room school”,
“it ages you, you little fool!”,
But truly I don’t really care,
It’s great to be here – this day to share,
Great memories, there are quite a few,
Some very old, some fairly new,
The ones we take home with us today,
Forever in our hearts will stay.
