One thing I really enjoyed was
the little band we had at Clearview School. The band members
were Cherie and Henry Delay, Violet Woiciechowski, and
Bob and Shirley Tanner. Every so often Mr. Mills would
pack us all into his car and take us to another school
to put on a little show for them. It was a lot of fun
and we got away from our class for a few hours.
An earlier memory was when I went to East Litchfield School,
which later the name was changed to Orchard Hill Road
School, every May day we would go to Luckso’s falls
for a may day picnic. We would play games and go swimming
and have a Maypole.
School was never called doff because of bad weather. We
would walk to school and some of us would walk two miles
or more.
I graduated from Clearview School in 1938. My teacher
was Miss Florence Butler, later she married Bradford Smith.
Now for something humorous; when my son Marcus was in
first grade at the Consolidated School, he had Mrs. Smith
for his forth grade teacher. One recess Mrs. Smith went
outside and found Marcus surrounded by his classmates
and she heard him say “gee our teacher must be really
old. My mother had her for a teacher in grammer school.”
The first song I remember from school was taught us in
first grade by Miss Mary Scanlon. The name was “autumn
Leaves”. I don’t remember all of the words
but the chorus was:
“Come little leaves said the wind one day”;
“Come oer the meadow with me and play”;
“Put on your dresses of red and gold;”
“For summer has gone and the days grow cold.”
