I remember going to the house that wasn’t too far from school and getting our drinking water. Two of us would go together with an empty pail. The ones who lived there would fill it with water and we would take it back to school. We did this every school day.

We had a wood stove to warm our schoolroom. I remember walking to school early in the mornings with my brother, so he could start the fire and have it warm for the teacher and students. We had a room that was just for the wood that was used for the wood stove. My brother was in the 7th and 8th grade when he died.

Every Halloween our outhouse, as it was called, tipped over and we would have to wait for someone to put it back up so we could use it.
Lewis S. Mills, our rural Supervisor, would come to visit our school once a month, sometimes twice. He would always tell us an interesting story and ask us questions. Sometimes, he would bring students from other schools to visit our school. These students would sing or play musical instruments. I would look forward to seeing Mr. Mills as he was very nice to us.
