Orchard Hill School had two rooms. Some of the teachers meetings were held here.

We didn’t have running water so whoever would get their school work done, were able to go down the road to Mrs. Wilcox’s house to get water for drinking. It would take two people to carry the container back to the school. Mrs. Wilcox would always have apples for a treat.

Because I lived close to the school, I was able to go home for lunch. During winter when there was snow on the ground, I would slide home on a piece of cardboard, then walk back to school.

I went to school in the 30’s. when we finished grammar school we were bused to Torrington High School.

I remember Mr. Mills, he only came once in a while. I enjoyed the stories he told. He was a very pleasant man.

I remember one year at the end of school, we walked down to the Luksco farm to their falls and had a picnic.

One year for a field trip, we went to my farm to see the corn being cut for silage for the cows for winter.

When the flowers started blooming, we would see who could bring more different flowers, wild flowers that is.

Also we used to see how many different birds we would see.

School was different then what schooling is now. I enjoyed the country school.

When we didn’t have school because of the weather, we had to listen to the Torrington factory whistle.
