In 1938 a group of five girls
got together to sing and entertain other schools. The
group consisted of three DeParta sisters and two Melius
sisters. The DeParta sisters were Gladys, who played the
Hawaiian guitar, Josephine, who sang very well and Geraldine,
who tap-danced. The Melius sisters were Edith and Doris
who sang.
Together was formed a group called “The harmony
maids”. Our Superintendent of Schools (Mr. Lewis
Mills) heard us and liked what he heard.
Soon the Harmony Maids were traveling with him to entertain
other schools. It wasn’t long before we sang at
many other places. We sang at speaking contests, churches
and at school programs elsewhere. We all sang four part
harmony and really enjoyed singing together.
My favorite songs were “Church in the Wildwood”
and “I walked Through the garden alone.”
Mr. Mills took us many places. We went to see Greg
Hedland and his players. He played all over and with
WTIC. We saw the Hartford Library, Danbury State Teachers
College and also got to see a real Indian; Chief P.G.
Uncas.
We traveled from School to school entertaining many
other children.
We always had a good time together whenever we went
and whatever we did.
