Terryville Road School and Four corners School are the two I attended in Harwinton. I had many happy times at school.

My most memorable, or should I say embarrassing moment, was at Terryville Road School. It was at Christmas and we were having a play for all the parents to see. Our teacher, Miss Butler at that time (now Mrs. Florence Smith) was in charge and had brought a very pretty dress and I was to wear it as I was an angel in this play. She asked me to be very careful and I said that I would. Little did I realize what was about to happen. As most of you know, electricity was not in these little one-room schools. As it was an evening play and our parents were there we had to change into our costumes in the outhouse, which was dark. Oh, we had a flashlight but with two or three girls in there we didn’t have too much room. I got changed OK and when I went to leave the premises someone quickly closed the door only to catch the dress in the door. Whoops! It ripped. What to do? I finally went back into the school and told Miss Butler what had happened. I was so embarrassed that I cried. Her remark to me was “Don’t worry Dear.” She put a pin in the rip and the play went on as scheduled. I told her I was very sorry but to this day, I can remember this incident. This happened sometime between 1935 and 1936.
