Earned $15.00 per year to go early
to school and light the fire when in 8th grade. Given
time during the day to split wood.
No running water. Two of us would
have the duty to go up to John Scibi’s farm (Now
Henry Camps Farm) with a water container. We would put
the handle over a special stick so two of us could carry
it back to the school.
Outdoor toilets – every
day some group cleaned them.
Clean the blackboards each day
at the end of school.
We would have speaking contests
at Community Hall to determine which boy or girl would
speak at graduation.
Graduation would be held at Harwinton
Congregational Church decorated with laurel and a special
stage put up front.
I remember teachers Matilda Dezinno
and Mildred Walsh. They would walk from the Capel Farm
to respective schools that they taught at – Locust
Road and Four Corners.
We would give our teacher a ride
on our sled in the wintertime down the hill from Cleveland’s
house.
After Harwinton Fair we’d
run down at noon hour to see if we could find dimes,
quarters, nickels and pennies that people or concessionaires
dropped on the ground.
I remember Lewis S. Mills visiting
periodically in his Oldsmobile and cane.
I remember see Governor’s
visiting the Harwinton fair and we all sang songs on
the bandstand.
I remember the Casting Campbell’s
acrobat team always performing at Harwinton Fair. They
practice on Cronin Farm. (Steve Bekasi, Rose Delgobo,
Jim Delgobo Etc.)
Bill Arnold and I were the only
two boys graduating 8th grade at Locust Road as I recall.
There were the State children
Mrs. Hart took in that went to Locust Road – Bertha
Burns – Raymond Curtis – Frank Sesko and
more)
