As fifth grade students at Locust Road, Ed Mahoney and I were firemen. We were the first to arrive at school each day, started the fire and maintained it throughout the day. We also had to pile firewood in the woodshed after it was dumped in the yard. We were paid $25.00 for the year’s work, which we split between us.

Going to school down Locust Road hill on sleds and ice skates. How did Mrs. Kelly ever make it to school on those days?

The 8th grade trek in the woods to get a Christmas tree for school.

Playing Duck on the Rock, where we each threw a stone at another stone on a big rock while kids were standing and running in the immediate area. Can you imagine the consequences if that game were played in schools today?

Several of us climbing saplings in the woods and bending them to the ground with our combined weight.

At noon hour swimming in the little pond south of Bull Road bridge.

Being the only 5th grader allowed to play softball with the upper class kids because they didn’t have enough players without me.

The day that Mrs. O’Brian / Terreau was the only one in the classroom that didn’t know that one of her garters had fallen on the classroom floor during class.
