I was janitor and lit two fires every morning. The school was on our land and that was our ball field.

Looking out the window and seeing the cows eating.

We had two outhouses.

We got drinking water at Wilcox’s.

We finally got electricity and Bob Steele was on for the G. Fox morning watch.

We got off to get a Christmas tree in the woods and we took the whole day to get it. We made all the decorations for it in school.

Valentines day we had a big box and would get one person to get for.

I can remember Mr. Mills had a wooden leg,

Mr. Seager had apple trees so we would hit the ball up into the trees and get apples.

We would pledge allegiance to the flag every morning and you made sure the flag never touched the ground while putting it up or down.

We came home for lunch each day.

For eighth grade graduation we got to go out and pick flowers for the Congregational Church in Harwinton center. I can still smell the musty velvet red seats in the church.

Mrs. Flarity had taken 8mm movies of us playing ball.

I got 15 cents a fire – 30 cents a day for being janitor.

For Halloween they would tip over the outhouses. One year they put a sleigh on the roof.
